Jan 21st, 2020, the proposal from Simon Boersma a local businessperson, proposed to the Town Council at its Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday. Morinville should join with Sturgeon County and the other towns in the area to form a unified municipality. Simon continued to shine light on the fact that $6 million to $10 million of taxpayer’s money was getting wasted by the system due to the substantial number of mayors, councillor's and chiefs. “We believe $6 million to $10 million of taxpayers’ revenue is being wasted annually by this system. Over the next 10 years, $60 million to $100 million will be wasted” Said Simon. This is remarkably interesting as it will affect Bon Accord. What does this mean for Bon Accord? Over the years there have been talks on creating one municipality. The time is getting closer to closing the deal.
As the town of Bon Accord has a wonderful council with an amazing Mayor, fire, and police chief. What does this do for them? Many questions are to be had when talking about the thought of the small towns surrounding Sturgeon County to join and create one municipality. Relocation for a lot of employees not only located in Bon Accord but the other surround towns. What happens to the police force and fire fighters in the towns? Will they go by Sturgeon County?
As Bon Accord has a rich history behind the name of the town, what will happen to the name? Will Bon Accord still be Bon Accord? For many years Bon Accord has strived on its own without the help of other bigger surrounding towns. We as a town are aware of the benefits and negatives that arise with this topic. Our community will always be Bon Accord's community. If this proposal goes through there will be momentous changes coming not only to Bon Accord. But our surrounding neighbors.
